FULL BAND BIOGRAPHY

The world-renowned party purveyors of contemporary world music Molotov Jukebox, are a London six piece like no other. Fusing an unrivalled onstage presence with the sunny sounds of carnivals from all four corners of the world, the band is an explosion of colour and energy, making them a firm festival favourite and unmissable live act. Following on from the success of 2014’s debut album Carnival Flower and subsequent live appearances, their second LP Tropical Gypsy is set for release on 15th April 2016 via Pause For Effect Records, and with a full UK tour planned for May, the sun shows no sign of setting on Molotov Jukebox anytime soon.

The London-based group was formed accidentally way back in 2008 by singer, accordionist and actress Natalia Tena and violinist Sam Apley, whilst busking at a festival in the English countryside. Upon hearing them, another festival-goer asked to book them for a show in London. After explaining they didn’t have a band, but when they did it would be called Molotov Jukebox, the show was booked and a band had to be born.

From that moment, the dice was cast and it was clear the band’s appeal lay in its truly riotous whirlwind of latino influenced horns, accordion and violin; all tightly bound together over guitar, bass and drums by the infectious vocals of Tena. Since their humble beginnings the band have gone on to sell out shows across the world, from Rio De Janeiro to Istanbul and thanks to their bi-lingual song-writing in both English and Spanish, the band’s debut Carnival Flower remained in the top 100 of the Amazon Latin downloads chart for over 11 months, proving dancing holds no borders.

2015 saw no let up and kicked off with a star studded performance at the official BAFTA after-party in February as well as the band’s first tour of South America, where – so inspired by the response to premiering new material – they announced their forthcoming album Tropical Gypsy and immediately began recording their new single and the video for track Hi Life Crisis upon their return from Mexico. Incorporating newly found sounds collected first hand on a South American tour last year, the band have added flavours of samba, fohó and cumbia to their existing Balkan influences and Tropical Gypsy not only represents the birth of a new genre, but is also the perfect description of the free spirited philosophy and wanderlust that the band truly embodies.
Famed for their ferocious performances around the globe, the band have graced some of the most prestigious line ups out there; from appearing on the Avalon stage at Glastonbury to performances at UK festivals such as Wilderness, Boomtown, Cambridge Folk Festival and Womad as well as sets at Vive Latino in Mexico, Eurosonic in Holland and Iboga Festival in Spain.

To celebrate the release of their astounding record, Molotov Jukebox will be taking their music on the road once again, playing a very special show on 5th May at London’s Village Underground in London’s multi-cultural melting pot, Shoreditch, as well as performing 11 other dates across the UK.
